Who is Jonas Jud?

Biography

Swiss bass Jonas Jud is emerging as one of the most promising young voices in opera and concert repertoire, admired for his rich tone and commanding stage presence. Born in St. Gallen, he began vocal studies in 2014 with Svetlana Afonina before moving to Italy to study at the Conservatorio di Musica Agostino Steffani in Castelfranco Veneto. He later earned a Master’s degree at the Yale School of Music, broadening his artistic scope and international experience.

From 2022 to 2024, Jud was a member of the International Opera Studio of the Zürich Opera House, where he appeared in productions such as Salome (Second Soldier) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Peter Quince).

Since the 2024/25 season, he has been part of the ensemble at Theater St. Gallen, returning to his hometown to take on major roles. His operatic repertoire already spans key bass parts including Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Colline (La Bohème), Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), and Caronte (L’Orfeo).

Alongside his stage work, Jud has cultivated an active concert career. He has appeared with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra under Fabio Biondi, performed in the International Opera Studio Gala Concert at Zürich Opera, and made his Salzburg Festival debut in 2024. His oratorio repertoire includes Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s Magnificat, Christmas Oratorio, Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Christus am Ölberge, and Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, with performances at venues such as Tonhalle Zürich, Konzert und Theater St. Gallen and festivals across Switzerland and Austria.

Jud’s artistry has also been recognized internationally. In 2022 he was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera’s Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition and won second prize at the Giulio Gari Vocal Competition in New York.

With his combination of vocal authority, stylistic sensitivity, and versatility between opera and concert repertoire, Jonas Jud is poised for a significant international career.
